How to choose the right energy drink?

Boissons énergétiques ou d'effort Mulebar

Grégoire Dandres |

When you play sports, choosing the right sports drink is essential for maximizing performance, staying hydrated, and avoiding fatigue. However, it can be difficult to find your way among all the available options: pre-event drink, exercise drink, isotonic drink, recovery drink, energy drink, or even hydration drink or electrolyte drink. I have visited many sports nutrition brand websites since launching my Mulebar drinks in May, and I have to admit that it is not easy to make sense of them, as some brands create confusion by mixing concepts and claims. This article will therefore, I hope, help you better understand the differences between the various drinks and learn how to choose the right sports drink.

What is a sports drink?

A sports drink is a beverage specially designed to provide athletes with the nutrients they need during or after physical exercise. These drinks generally contain carbohydrates, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium), and sometimes vitamins to meet the body's energy and hydration needs. Sports drinks differ from energy drinks, which often contain caffeine and other stimulants and which I will discuss further below.

Why is it important to choose the right sports drink?

Choosing the right sports drink is crucial for several reasons. By consuming a drink suited to your physical activity, you can:

  • Maintain good energy levels during exercise.
  • Prevent muscle cramps with electrolytes.
  • Promote rapid recovery after exercise.
  • Prevent dehydration, especially during prolonged exercise (marathons, trail races, cycling events, triathlons) or in difficult weather conditions.

What are the different drinks for athletes?

The pre-event drink for preparing your body before exercise

The pre-event drink is a beverage consumed several days before the event and then between the last meal and the start of the effort, often during preparation or warm-up phases. It is rich in carbohydrates to ensure optimal energy reserves, known as glycogen. This drink is ideal for preparing your body for the effort ahead without causing heaviness or digestive discomfort.

Among the main ingredients in pre-exercise drinks is the famous “Malto.” Maltodextrin is a combination of several carbohydrates derived from the hydrolysis of wheat starch or, more often, corn starch. Hydrolysis involves breaking down large starch molecules so that they can be digested more quickly and easily by the body. Depending on the intensity of this hydrolysis, the molecules are larger or smaller, with glucose being the smallest molecule. Maltodextrin is intermediate in size between glucose and starch. It has no sweet taste and no odor.

The energy drink for recharging your batteries during exercise

The classic energy drink is consumed during exercise to quickly provide carbohydrates and energy. It generally contains a moderate sugar concentration, electrolytes, and sometimes amino acids (BCAAs). It is ideal for long-duration activities such as cycling and running.

The sports drink for maintaining a high energy level

The sports drink is an energy drink designed to maintain athletes’ energy levels during prolonged exercise. It contains a balanced combination of carbohydrates and electrolytes to compensate for fluid and energy losses caused by sweating. This type of drink is particularly suitable for endurance sports, where a constant energy supply is needed to prevent fatigue.

Energy drink: watch out for the pitfalls!

People very often confuse the two. Unlike an energy drink, a sports drink often contains caffeine, taurine, and other stimulants that are very rarely natural. Although they can provide a temporary boost and hold off fatigue, they do not replace the body’s nutritional and fluid losses during exercise. Worse still, they can pose health risks when consumed excessively, such as an increased heart rate or dehydration problems, since they are loaded with glucose, the worst sugar that can exist on Earth. These drinks should be banned from sports—and not only sports; a good coffee or tea will do the trick!!!

The electrolyte or hydration drink for replacing lost minerals

The electrolyte or hydration drink is specially formulated to replenish electrolytes lost through sweating without providing carbohydrates. It generally contains only the main mineral salts: sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, as well as vitamins. It normally contains virtually no carbohydrates, which are instead provided by other sports nutrition products such as dried fruit, energy bars, energy gels, or energy fruit purées.

Exercising exclusively with a hydration drink is not recommended, except during a low-intensity effort lasting less than 1 hour. This drink is essential in hot or humid environments, or during long sessions when a lot of water and minerals are lost through sweating.

The recovery drink for optimizing muscle regeneration

The recovery drink plays an essential role in the post-exercise process. It is specially formulated to help muscles recover after intense physical activity by providing the body with proteins, carbohydrates, and electrolytes. A recovery drink helps restore energy stores (glycogen) and repair damaged muscle tissue. These drinks also contain essential amino acids that contribute to protein synthesis, thereby promoting regeneration and reducing muscle fatigue. They are particularly recommended after long or intense efforts such as a marathon, a long cycling session, or an intense gym workout.

What do the terms hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic mean?

This concept defines the composition of the drink, whether it is intended for before, during, or after exercise. It is therefore a characteristic independent of when it is consumed and more closely related to the intensity of the physical effort.

The hypotonic drink

A hypotonic drink has a lower concentration of electrolytes and carbohydrates than blood plasma. It is therefore less dense or “loaded” than blood. The particles it contains are absorbed quickly by the body, making it highly effective for rapid hydration. It is therefore ideal for moderate physical activities where sweating is light and rapid hydration is needed without any particular need for carbohydrate intake. Examples include hiking, yoga, or a moderate gymnastics session. There is little choice on the sports nutrition market because plain water works perfectly well at a lower cost.

The isotonic drink

An isotonic drink has the same concentration of carbohydrates and mineral salts (electrolytes) as blood plasma. This also enables rapid absorption by the body. It helps rehydrate while providing carbohydrates, vitamins, and amino acids. It is ideal for higher-intensity or longer-duration efforts. This type of drink, which accounts for most of the market, is often preferred in team sports, tennis, running, trail running, and cycling.

The hypertonic drink

As you may have gathered, a hypertonic drink has a higher concentration of electrolytes and carbohydrates than blood plasma. It tends to be higher in energy, helping replenish glycogen stores during recovery or during ultra-intense, prolonged efforts. It is not recommended for rapid hydration because the body takes longer to absorb it. A hypertonic drink can even be counterproductive during exercise, as it tends to draw water from the cells into the digestive tract, thereby worsening dehydration and cramps if consumed during exercise. Few brands offer hypertonic drinks because energy gels or purées, which are less bulky, work very well.

How do you choose the right energy drink for your sport?

With these clarifications about the different types of sports drinks, let’s see how to choose the right energy drink.

Choosing according to the duration and intensity of the effort

For short efforts (under 60 minutes), a simple hydration drink or water may be enough. For more intense and/or longer efforts, choose an isotonic sports drink that will provide lasting energy, replace electrolytes, and provide vitamins that support metabolism (the body’s energy production).

Choosing according to the weather conditions

In cases of intense heat or high humidity, fluid losses increase considerably. An electrolyte drink is therefore essential to prevent dehydration and cramps. In cool conditions, a less concentrated energy drink may be sufficient.

Choosing according to your tastes

There is enough choice on the market to select a drink whose taste you will enjoy. Ever since launching Mulebar in 2008, I have never stopped saying that enjoyment during exercise is just as important as, or even more important than, physical fitness. We all agree that when the body gives out, it is often the mind that enables us to make it to the finish line. Taking care of your mental state means consuming tasty products that give you a boost. This is one of the essential characteristics of products in the Mulebar range.

Which form of energy drink should you use?

Energy drinks are available in 3 forms.

There are those that are already prepared in plastic bottles. In my opinion, this is the last option to choose, because not only is transporting water very expensive due to the space it takes up (you will inevitably pay for this in the final price), but also because using plastic bottles is no longer really in keeping with the times.

The 2nd option is tablets or tabs to dissolve in water. Aside from being extremely practical, these products have a limitation related to their size. A tablet cannot contain as many active ingredients as loose powder, because of the amount of ascorbic acid it must contain to dissolve properly. My comparative guide to the various energy drinks on the market will demonstrate this more than clearly.

Finally, there are powdered drinks, which are generally better formulated than the previous options. Powder allows you to adjust the dosage based on feedback from training tests. This requires a minimum amount of organization to prepare the drink in advance. Choose Doypack packaging (resealable flexible pouches with a zip), which protects the powder from oxidation more effectively. It is advisable to remove as much air as possible before resealing the pouch. In fact, powders sold in tubs tend to dry out and clump after a few weeks.

Common mistakes to avoid when choosing an energy drink

Neglecting the ingredients

As a general rule, it is essential to read the ingredient list carefully on the labels of all your food products. Avoid formulas that are too sugary or contain artificial ingredients such as colorants, flavorings, or preservatives.

Using only one type of drink

The type of drink you consume should vary depending on the stages of your training or competition (before, during, and after exercise). Do not rely entirely on a single drink, as each one has its own purpose, as explained above.

Test during training

It is strongly recommended that you test any new drink (gels, bars, fruit purées) during training. It would be a shame to ruin your ambitions during a race because of potential stomach problems. Products made with 100% natural ingredients are unlikely to cause problems, but given the price of some race entries, it is better to be cautious.

Why choose Mulebar energy drinks?

High-quality natural ingredients

Mulebar energy drinks with red berries and citrus fruits stand out for their high-quality, 100% natural ingredients, ensuring optimal absorption and better compatibility with the body, while avoiding the side effects associated with artificial additives. Since 2008, Mulebar’s DNA has been naturalness and taste, and that will never change.

A carefully considered dosage

Not all drinks are created equal. You simply need to compare the ingredient lists and the amount of each ingredient. Mulebar has a complete isotonic formula with the 5 major electrolytes, providing 30% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) per 600 ml serving, 8 vitamins, and amino acids (BCAAs). No other brand on the market is formulated as well. Compare for yourself.

A price in line with the market

At less than 24 euros per 15-serving pouch, Mulebar energy drinks are in line with average prices on the French market—neither more nor less—but feature an ideal formula and high-quality ingredients sourced in France.

Transparency and ethics

Mulebar is committed to providing high-quality products with complete transparency about their ingredients. The drinks are also developed in France as part of an ethical approach, respecting environmental and sustainability criteria.

Made in France

Made in the Massif Central, you can be sure that your Mulebar energy drink has not traveled halfway around the world to boost your performance.

Community experiences and reviews

The first reviews have been very positive, regardless of the flavor. This is the best indicator, rather than simply following the opinions of people who tested a product before you.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is the best energy drink for a marathon?
An isotonic or sports drink is ideal for a marathon because it rehydrates and provides carbohydrates throughout the race.

What should I drink before training?
