6 compotes énergétiques Mulebar dans le désert

Energy compotes, energy purees, energy pouches, energy fruit pulps... there are several names for this category of sports nutrition products created by Mulebar in 2016 and followed since by several brands. This is the price of success and proof that we were right about the interest of such products. If you are wondering what it is? What is it for? When to consume them and for what type of sporting activity? Read this article and discover our Mulebar sports energy compotes.

What is an energy compote ?

It is a fairly liquid mixture of mixed fruits and/or vegetables and carbohydrates packaged in a small, resealable, flexible pouch. The texture is reminiscent of jam or a liquid puree.

It is a practical and quick way to replenish your energy during a sporting activity. This type of product is therefore aimed at athletes. We do not consume this for a snack like a cereal bar, that's for sure!

What is the difference between compotes and energy gels?

We created the Mulebar vegan energy compotes in 2016 because we heard too often at trade fairs or races from athletes that they no longer consumed gels. Too sweet, not natural enough, not practical enough because they were not resealable. We therefore had to create a new energy product with a cap, in practical packaging, in a small format that fits in your pocket, with a pleasant taste and texture, all at an affordable price. As our DNA at Mulebar is naturalness, taste and pleasure during exercise, the idea of using fruits and vegetables seemed obvious to us.

The texture of the compotes is creamier and a little more nourishing than an energy gel which is more like a syrup. You can also taste the fruit much more.

Their resealable cap makes them more practical, especially for those who prefer to consume them in several times.

The success of compotes is mainly due to their taste which makes these little gourds a real reward during exercise. This is the case of our organic and vegan Mulebar compote with Banana. 50% banana and 50% brown rice syrup for a result that really gives the impression of having mashed a banana yourself with a fork and added a little sugar.

How to use sports energy compotes?

A compote is generally consumed pure straight from the bottle, but some fairly fluid ones like Mulebar can also be diluted in water to make a drink. During a fairly intense activity, the right frequency of consumption of a vegan energy compote for sport is one bottle every hour. Ideally in 3 or 4 doses rather than all at once.

The human body needs sugar (glycogen) to make the muscles work but it does not like deviations (the "yo-yo" effect). This is why fractional consumption is recommended during exercise to maintain a stable blood sugar level. A sip every 15 minutes or one bottle per hour is a good frequency. If the pace is very fast, you will need to take more. You should also always drink water right after to remove the sugar from the mouth and help with digestion.

You should never wait until you feel a drop in energy to stock up on energy. It will be too late! Too much sugar intake at a time when the body is in deficit can even cause reactive hypoglyceamia.

Reactive hypoglycaemia explanation

Reactive hypoglyceamia usually occurs after too much sugar intake. In response to this hyperglycemia, the pancreas secretes a lot of insulin (a hypoglycemic hormone that facilitates the storage of glucose in muscle cells) to lower the sugar level, but sometimes too much.

All athletes have experienced this problem at least once in their life and usually during a competition that they missed! For fear of lacking energy, they take too much. It must also be recognized that some brands encourage consumption in their recommendations. The ideal is therefore to prepare your race diet during the training phase, the weeks preceding the competition.

Which sports are concerned by energy compotes ?

As a general rule, these are endurance sports or courses in which there may be phases of very intense effort. The best example is road cycling, triathlon or cross country mountain biking which are practiced for hours but punctuated by climbs before which it is preferable to take a little pick-me-up... that's the right word! The marathon or half-marathon are also big consumers especially in the second half of the race where the legs are heavier and where chewing solid food is incompatible with breathing. Finally, trailers and ultra trailers complete the list of athletes very fond of energy compotes.

Team sports players (football, handball, volleyball, rugby, basketball, etc.) are also increasingly consuming them. A compote is a good boost at half-time to get you going again.

We also have a lot of hikers among our loyal customers. They are not looking for performance but for safety. It is always good to have a source of energy in your backpack in case of hunger. The water bottles are very resistant, so they are not at risk and can be kept for months.

How long does it take for us to feel the effects of an energy compote?

While a cereal energy bar will take about twenty minutes to begin to be digested, a very fluid energy compote or puree passes into the bloodstream within 5 minutes of absorption like an energy gel but more nourishing and more fruity.

During long activities, it is advisable to alternate between solid and liquid food intake, except during fast running where chewing is not possible.

We use brown rice syrup as an energy base because this sugar does not contain fructose, the worst of all sugars, to be avoided as much as possible. Indeed, fructose is not synthesized by all the cells of the human body but only by the liver which transforms it into fat.
